🕌 Zakat Calculator 2026: How Much Do You Owe?
By Amiel Riss · Published 10 March 2026 · Updated 26 March 2026
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — a 2.5% annual obligation on wealth above a minimum threshold called Nisab. For Indian Muslims, calculating Zakat in Rupees with fluctuating gold prices and diverse investment portfolios can be confusing. Let's break it down.
What Is Nisab in Indian Rupees?
Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold. There are two standards:
- Gold Nisab: 85 grams of gold (~₹6,35,000 in March 2026 based on Indian gold prices)
- Silver Nisab: 595 grams of silver (~₹49,400 in March 2026)
Most scholars recommend the Gold Nisab as the Silver Nisab is very low and would make Zakat obligatory on relatively modest savings.
Which Assets Are Zakatable?
Zakat applies to wealth held for one full lunar year (Haul):
- Cash & Savings: Cash at home, savings accounts, FDs, receivables
- Gold & Silver: Jewelry, bars, coins at current market value (check today's rate on MCX)
- Investments: Stocks, mutual funds (SIPs), PPF balance, business inventory
- Rental Income: Accumulated rental payments
Deduct outstanding debts (home loans EMI, personal loans). If the net exceeds Nisab, pay 2.5%.
Step-by-Step Calculation
- Total all zakatable assets in ₹
- Subtract debts owed
- Compare net wealth against Nisab
- If above Nisab → pay 2.5%
Example: ₹4,15,000 cash + ₹12,45,000 gold + ₹16,60,000 stocks − ₹8,30,000 loans = ₹24,90,000 net. This exceeds Gold Nisab (₹6,35,000), so Zakat = ₹24,90,000 × 2.5% = ₹62,250.
Indian-Specific Considerations
- Gold jewelry: India is the world's largest gold consumer. Don't forget to include the current market value of all gold jewelry
- Mutual Funds & SIPs: Include the current NAV of all fund holdings
- Fixed Deposits: Include the principal + accrued interest
- Property for investment: Rental property income is zakatable; personal residence is exempt
Where to Pay Zakat in India
